Inland Foundation 2009 Fall Pops Benefit Concert
Inland’s fourth annual Fall Pops Benefit Concert was on Friday, October 30. The increasing popularity of the event has led us to make a major investment in the event—hiring the largest orchestra we’ve had to date!
Almost 40 musicians from the Bangor Symphony Orchestra wowed the audience with an evening of lively and familiar show tunes from Broadway and London’s West End. Conductor Trond Saeverud led the musicians through pieces from shows including Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar, Wicked, The Wizard of Oz, and Rent. Our special guest soprano is Suzanne Nance, MPBN’s host of "Morning Classical Music," performed but surprised us all by flying her friend Hyun Suk Jang in from Chicago. Jang is also a soprano who's performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and as been part of the cast of Phantom of the Opera. With the combine energy of Saeverud, Nance, and Jang the program was truly a delight.
Of special note was the Fall Pops' first ever "Special Guest Conductor": Charlie Guance. Charlie led the orchestra in a stirring rendition of Stars and Stripes. After his performance, Nance presented him with a special framed certificate and baton from the hospital thanking him for his more than four decades of directing Inland.
Proceeds from the concert are benefitting Bickford Medical Simulation Program at Inland Hospital. The Bickford Medical Simulation Program will feature four high-tech computerized mannequins called “patient simulators” that can be programmed to mimic a variety of complex medical scenarios, such as trauma, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, and airway obstructions. Two of the simulators are a mother and newborn and will allow staff to practice complicated obstetrics deliveries. The unique equipment tests staff and physicians’ clinical and decision-making skills with immediate performance feedback.
According to Rick Barry, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at Inland, “The use of human patient simulation provides an opportunity to reduce medical errors and their severity while improving patient care. The simulators allow for repeated practice of routine procedures, as well as rare conditions and life-threatening emergencies, all in a real-time environment.”
